The Africa Groups of Sweden is a solidarity organization independent of any political party or religious body.
During the 70´s and 80´s, the main purpose was to support the liberation struggle in Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau and Mozambique, and to fight the apartheid regime in South Africa and the continued colonisation of Namibia and Zimbabwe.
Since the end of Portuguese colonialism and the fall of apartheid, AGS has participated in and supported the reconstruction and democratisation processes in Southern Africa.
Currently we work in partnership with organizations in Angola, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe contributing towards democracy and poverty eradication. AGS has about 15 professionally trained and experienced development workers in Southern Africa.
A significant part of our activities takes place in Sweden. We have around 2000 members, of whom hundreds contribute with their free time in various activities such as awareness raising and fund-raising for our projects.
Our work is to influence public opinion in order to change the systems of trade, agriculture policies and other structures that prevent Africa from developing and gaining power over its own resources.
To contribute to a more diverse image of Africa in Sweden, AGS organizes a number of seminars and workshops. We publish a magazine every fourth month for the members as well as books and other study materials.
Our work is supported by the Swedish International Development Agency, Sida.
Founded in 1974, AGS has extensive experience and knowledge of each of "our" countries in Southern Africa.
Grading Swedish policy for global development
The Africa groups of Sweden have together with other organizations graded the Swedish Government to see how coherent the policy is in different areas with the overarching objective of contributing to a fair and sustainable development.
